Horus

Turns any Android phone into a real Alpine Linux environment to run coding agents locally or SSH in over USB/Wi-Fi.

Identifier: prj-005Built by Scarif LabsStatus: open source · shipped

A complete Alpine Linux userland engineered for Android with no root required. Run Claude Code, Codex, and zsh directly on the phone, or pair over SSH to use your phone as a private edge compute node instead of paying for cloud VMs.

01 / challenge

The architectural challenge

Coding agents like Claude Code and Codex demand local execution environments with shell, filesystem access, and package management. Developers on the go typically rely on costly cloud VMs or struggle with fragile Termux configurations that lack system isolation and background stability.

Constraint 01

Android OEM battery optimizers aggressively killing long-running terminal and agent processes.

Constraint 02

Translating Linux system calls safely without kernel modifications or root privileges.

Constraint 03

Providing zero-friction ADB pairing and key exchange for developers across macOS, Linux, and Windows.

02 / role

Scarif Labs' role & execution

Scarif Labs designed the brand identity, architecture, Android runtime packaging, pairing daemon, CLI tooling, and complete documentation hub for Horus.

Product & Interface Design
  • ↳Engineered the signature Eye of Horus animated CRT/dot-matrix display and noise telemetry aesthetic.
  • ↳Designed an ergonomics-first pairing workflow (horus pair) connecting Android devices over ADB with one command.
  • ↳Authored a comprehensive 15-chapter documentation guide covering agents, terminal multiplexing, and troubleshooting.
Systems & Software Engineering
  • ↳Packaged an unprivileged Alpine Linux 3.24 userland leveraging proot for hermetic filesystem isolation without root.
  • ↳Engineered the horus-cli on npm for cross-device SSH tunneling, automated port forwarding, and multi-device orchestration.
  • ↳Built background persistence handlers to maintain agent runs through aggressive Android process limits.
03 / architecture

System architecture & solution

Horus operates via an isolated Alpine Linux rootfs executing in userspace through system call translation (proot). The horus CLI establishes reverse SSH tunnels over ADB, providing seamless terminal attachment, port forwarding, and file synchronization between host machines and mobile devices.

Engineering Solution:

Developed an unprivileged proot translation layer coupled with background wake-lock maintenance and the horus CLI pairing protocol, delivering instant terminal access and reliable agent daemon execution.
